Domains

A domain name is much more than an Internet address. It’s all things in one: your brand and your reason for being — both online and off. A name can inspire, excite, motivate and entice. At the same time, it can repel, bore, confuse and polarize. Creating an original, compelling and appropriate name for your online business will be one of your most difficult, but critical, challenges.

Just as in the bricks and mortar world, your online domain name must help you stand out from the crowd by reflecting who you are, what you’re about and even why people should do business with you. But your online name has the additional challenge of fulfilling these same expectations without the benefits of a recognized physical location, attractively presented merchandise or friendly employees greeting customers.

The name must be appealing, distinct, memorable and easy to pronounce and spell. Remember: you want people to type your name into a web browser. In fact, an effective domain name works like an 800 number: it’s easy for people to recall from just a flash on a TV screen or billboard, or from a radio commercial when they don’t have pen — or dictionary — at hand.

All of these factors can make the difference between being found or lost in cyberspace.
