Spending $35M on a Domain Name As a Defense Strategy

I just came across Lessons Learned from Brian Sharples, founder & CEO of HomeAway

Sharples co-founded HomeWay in February 2005. Sine then, he raised nearly $405 million in private funding and acquired 17 websites, to create the world’s leading online marketplace of vacation rentals.

Sharples, shares some of his lessons learned at the 2011 Capital Factory Demo Day, just after HomeAway’s successful IPO. Watch this talk for a funny and informative list of Lessons Learned from one of Austin’s biggest success stories.

In particular, I took note where Sharples says “we bought VacationRentals.com for $35 million bucks. The only reason we bought it was so that Expedia couldn’t have that URL.”

Here is the Press Release from May 2007 when HomeAway announced the acquisition.

Of course if you don’t already know what happened next, Expedia Acquired HomeAway for $3.9 Billion in November 2015.
